Who Designed The Real Floppy Disk Drive?

Alan Shugart is credited with inventing the floppy disk drive (FDD) in 1967 while working at IBM. The first floppy drives used an 8-inch disk, which was later called a diskette as the size of the floppy disk got smaller. The 5.25-inch disk was then used in the first IBM Personal Computer in 1981.

It’s important to note that while Shugart is recognized as the inventor, he wasn’t working alone! He was part of a team at IBM that was exploring new ways to store data. The team was looking for a way to replace the bulky and unreliable magnetic tape drives that were commonly used at the time. The original 8-inch floppy disks had a capacity of 80 kilobytes, which was a significant improvement over the magnetic tape drives. However, the disks were quite fragile and prone to damage. The 5.25-inch disks, which were introduced in 1976, were much more durable and had a higher capacity of 360 kilobytes. They became a standard for personal computers in the 1980s, allowing people to easily share files and software.
